Licensed day care, home boarding and dog walking in Halifax.

What happens to your dog while you are at work

Not a kennel. Your dog spends the day in my house on Wheatley Road, near Northowram, with a large enclosed garden and other dogs for company.

I'm Diane Carter, and I look after every dog here myself. Leaving one for the first time is the hard part, so here is the whole day in order.

Licensed, inspected and qualified

Anyone can say they love dogs. These are the four things you can check before you hand a lead over.

Licence HBO0075

Issued by Calderdale Council for home boarding and day care.

5-star rating

The council's own star rating, and the top band of it.

Trained and insured

Qualified for day care and home boarding, and fully insured.

Canine first aid trained

The training you hope never gets used.

The licence runs to 21 February 2027, and it is on the Calderdale public register — I will show it to you too. Boarding dogs without one is not legal.

A day at mine, start to finish

No two days run to the minute. This is the shape of one, and what I'll need from you before the first.

Before the first day

You come round, and so does your dog

No dog gets dropped off cold. You come to the house first and see the garden. Your dog meets me on their own terms, with you standing there.

It is also where the useful detail comes out. The more I know, the less I guess:

  • What they eat, how much, and when.
  • Any medication, and how it's normally given.
  • How they are with other dogs — honestly, not hopefully.
  • Your vet, and a number answered while you're at work.
From 07:45, Monday to Friday

Drop-off at the front door

The door opens at a quarter to eight. It is a house, not a reception desk. Hand me the lead and get off to work.

Most dogs are pulling up the path within a fortnight. Long goodbyes make it harder, not easier.

Through the morning

The garden, and the other dogs

The garden is large and properly enclosed. It's the first thing owners ask about and the first thing I show them.

That's where the morning goes: room to chase, and friends to chase with.

The walk

Wheatley Road sits on the edge of things. Ten minutes from the middle of Halifax one way, open fields the other.

So walks go out into the countryside, the parks and the nature reserves. I also walk dogs on their own, if a walk is all you need.

Water, a lie down, and the paddling pool

A dog that has run all morning needs a quiet afternoon. Water down, somewhere to flop, and a proper sleep.

In warm weather the dog paddling pool comes out. They love it, and the quiet hour starts later.

The photo that lands on your phone

The hardest part of the first week is yours, not your dog's.

"I understand that it can be hard to leave your dog. To give you peace of mind I can send photos, videos and updates on your dog's day."

Diane Carter, Waggy Tails.

Worth knowing: one picture at lunchtime, or the full running commentary. Tell me which you'd rather have.

Pick-up

Day care runs to half five. You collect a dog that has been outside, walked and in company all day, with nothing left to give.

If you're stuck on the M62, ring me rather than assume.

Staying over

Home boarding, which is not a kennel

In a kennel a dog spends the night in a run on its own. Here they sleep in the house, with the same garden and the same routine they know from day care.

A night, a fortnight or a full holiday. Every dog who stays is treated as part of the family.

Weekends: Saturday and Sunday are for boarders only. There is no weekend day care.

Everything I do

Six things, all from the same house and the same garden.

What it costs comes down to three things: your dog, how many days a week, and how long the stay is. Ring me with those and I'll give you a figure on the phone.
