A pet shop with tanks in it.
Live fish, and frozen mice for the reptiles. Neither is easy to find nearby, and both are why people come into King Street.
The rest is a proper local pet shop: food, treats and supplies for dogs, birds, fish, reptiles and small animals.
If something is not on the shelf we will order it in. And if you are not sure what to buy, ask — that is what the counter is for.
Food on the shelf, treats worth the walk in.
Natural dog treats are one of the things regulars come in for, and the food and accessories sit alongside them. Bring the empty bag, or a photograph of the label, if you are matching what your dog is already on.
Switch a dog onto a new food gradually, a bit more of it each day across a week. Do it overnight and you will upset their stomach.
Feed for the garden and the cage.
Bird feed is kept in stock, with the rest of the bird supplies beside it. If you go through a particular mix, or want a bigger bag, say so and we will get it in.
Ask at the counter and you will get an answer from somebody who feeds birds, rather than one read off a shelf-edge label.
What the birds want, and when
In summer the birds are feeding young, so smaller seed and softer food do more good than whole peanuts. A mesh feeder earns its keep in those weeks.
Cage birds are a different shelf again. Tell us the bird and we will point you at the right mix.

Live fish, and the kit that keeps them alive.
Tanks of live fish in the shop, with the aquarium and fishkeeping sundries that go beside them. Keeping livestock properly is why the chains leave it alone.
What is in the tanks moves week to week, so ring and ask and you will be told what is in today.
Starting a tank? A new one needs four to six weeks running before it is safe to stock. That is how long the bacteria that deal with fish waste take to build up, and it is the bit most people skip.
Frozen mice, out of the freezer here.
Frozen mice as reptile feed, kept in the shop with the rest of the reptile supplies. It is the other thing the bigger shops around Brighouse will not stock.
Thaw frozen feed in the fridge overnight, or in a sealed bag in cool water. Never in a microwave, and never refreeze it.
Small animal supplies, whichever one you keep.
Which animal it is changes the answer, so say what you have when you ring. We carry general pet supplies across several animals, cats included.
For rabbits and guinea pigs, hay is the bulk of it. Nuggets and greens go on top of the hay, rather than the other way round.
The one thing worth getting right
Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so all of it has to come from what they eat. Buy their food in a bag you will get through, and keep it out of the light.
Rabbits' teeth grow all their lives, and chewing hay is what keeps them down. It is the least glamorous thing on the shelf and the most important.
If it is not on the shelf, we will get it.
Two things a shop with a person in it can do that a warehouse cannot.
The first is ordering in. A particular food, a brand, a size we do not normally keep — ask at the counter and we will get it for you.
The second is helping you choose. Which feed, which treat, which bit of kit, and whether the thing in your hand is right for your animal. Card, contactless and cash all taken.
Find the shop on King Street.
In the middle of Brighouse. Ring to ask what is in the tanks, to have something ordered in, or for help choosing.
