Everything we sell, filtered by what you keep

Starting with two things the big shops nearby will not sell you: tanks of live fish, and frozen mice for reptiles out of the freezer.

The rest is an ordinary, well-kept pet shop. Dog food and natural treats, bird feed, aquarium sundries, reptile and small animal supplies. If it is not on the shelf, we will order it in.

Live fish

Tanks of live fish in the shop. Ring for a particular species before you set off, and ask at the counter what will get along with what you already have.

Frozen mice for feeding reptiles, kept in the shop. Along with the live fish, it is what people travel to King Street for. Thaw it in the fridge overnight, never in a microwave.

A tank needs a filter, a heater if it is tropical, food and a way of testing the water. Tell us the tank and the problem and we will point you at the right thing.

Supplies for reptile keepers alongside the frozen feed. Most of keeping a reptile well is heat, light and food, so say what you keep and we will work through it with you.

Natural treats are one of the things the shop is known for. Bring the dog in with you if it helps; plenty of people choose by what theirs goes for.

Feed for birds, kept in stock. If you use a particular mix, or a bigger bag than we normally keep, say so and we will get it in.

The rest of the bird shelf beyond the feed. Garden birds want fat through the cold months, so sunflower hearts, peanuts and suet are the standbys from autumn to spring.

Supplies for small animals. Hay is the bulk of what a rabbit or a guinea pig should be eating, with nuggets and greens on top rather than the other way round.

A specific food, a particular brand, a size we do not normally keep. Ask at the counter and we will order it in for you.

The same goes for choosing. Somebody will talk you through what suits your animal before you spend anything, which is most of what an independent shop is for.

An independent, which is the whole point

A chain shop has a plan on a wall telling it what goes where. King Street has a counter and somebody behind it who will tell you which food, which feed, which treat. They will also say when the thing in your hand is the wrong one.

The live fish and the frozen reptile feed are what nobody else round here does. Both need looking after properly, which is why the big shops leave them alone and why people come into town for them.
