Tell us the job before you ring.
Electrician in Halifax, domestic and commercial. Three taps below and you'll know what the job involves and whether it needs a certificate. Then send it over with the details already written for you.
What moves the price.
Two jobs that sound identical on the phone can be a day apart. It nearly always comes down to the same four things.
- 01How far the cable has to run, and what it has to run through.
- 02Whether walls get chased and plastered back, or trunking will do.
- 03Whether the existing board can take another circuit, or wants changing first.
- 04Whether the work has to be tested and certified at the end.
That is why a figure guessed down the phone is worth very little. Fill the builder in, or send a photo of the fuse board and the room, and you'll get a proper number back.
Nothing starts until you've agreed it. If something unexpected turns up behind the plaster, you hear about it before the tools come out again.
The work that has to be signed off.
Part P of the building regulations decides this, not the electrician. It matters most when you come to sell.
A new circuit is notifiable. So is replacing a consumer unit, and most work inside a bathroom. That work has to be inspected, tested and registered, and you keep the certificate.
Swapping a socket or a light fitting on a circuit that already exists is not notifiable. It still gets tested, because a loose connection behind a faceplate is how most scorch marks start.
Car chargers sit in their own category again and have to be notified to the network operator. Ask which side of the line your job falls on before you book anybody.
On the day itself.
Sheets down first, and the power off for as short a stretch as the job allows. If the freezer or a home office is a problem, say so and the order of work changes.
You'll be told what's wrong before anything gets replaced, in words you can check afterwards. Chased walls are filled. Old cable, boxes and offcuts leave with us.
