A traditional sweet shop on Bridge Gate, Hebden Bridge. Chocolates, liquorice and fudge, through to toffee, cold drinks and ice cream.
Walls of jars, weighed out loose by the pound. Or made up into a tin, a box, a bag or a gift box. Open seven days, ten till five.
The wall is the shop. Point at a jar and it comes down, gets weighed and goes into a bag. If you cannot see what you are after, ask — there is always more on the shelves than fits in a list.
Chocolates of several kinds, and handmade truffles. Large mixed boxes too, for when one thing on its own will not do.
Homemade fudge, and toffee of the proper chewy sort. Caramels as well, for anybody guarding a filling.
Liquorice in most of its shapes. Also liquorice wood — the actual root you chew, which people ring round half of Yorkshire for.
The old-fashioned ones, strong and plain and thoroughly unfashionable. Milder sorts too, for whoever came in with you.
What the children make straight for. A fair number of grown-ups quietly buy them as well.
Ice cream and cold drinks. Something to walk back up Bridge Gate with.
Loose by the pound is the usual way. It is the reason to come in rather than order a plastic tray of something. But it is not the only way, and a good part of the shop goes out as a present.
Loose sweets are weighed at the counter, so the bill follows what you pick and how much of it. Tins and gift boxes are built to the size you want. Say what you have in mind and it gets made up in front of you.
A good part of the shelf is retro and nostalgic confectionery. These are the sweets people grew up with and then stopped being able to find. Most customers recognise something before they are two steps through the door.
That is the thing about a wall of jars rather than a rack of packets. You can see what is in them. Bring somebody who has never been in and let them read the labels.
Ten in the morning until five, Monday through to Sunday. No half-day and no closing on a Wednesday. Open on a Sunday, when a fair bit of Hebden Bridge is not.
Weekend times are worth a call before you set off.
Bridge Gate, in the middle of Hebden Bridge. A few doors up from the bridge itself, an easy walk from the bus stop.
Ring if you are after something in particular. We will tell you straight whether it is in, and save you the trip if it is not.
