ELECTRIC AUTOMATIC BOLLARD

Up in seconds, locked without a key.

A 600mm stainless post that rises out of your drive on a signal from the handset, holds the space while you are out, and drops flush again when you want it back.

Work the handset on the right and watch the post answer it. The height beside it is the real one — 600mm standing clear of the ground.

THE HANDSET

Three buttons, and one press on each.

Nothing has to be held down. Raise sends the post up until it locks itself. Lower brings it back level with the surface.

The middle button has two jobs. While the post is travelling it halts it on the spot and keeps it there. While the post is standing still, the same button turns the light ring under the cap on and off.

Every control box comes with two handsets, so one can stay in the car and one by the front door.

WHAT ARRIVES

Fifteen kilos of solid stainless.

The post is solid steel rather than a sleeve over a plastic core, and the weight is the argument: it is what a vehicle meets if somebody ignores the drive anyway.

Polished silver holds its appearance outdoors and resists rust, so a post that has stood through a few winters still looks deliberate rather than defensive.

It fixes down on an adjustable screw-on fitting, which earns itself on an older surface where the ground falls away more than it appears to from the pavement.

HOW MANY

One post for a car width.

Two cars abreast takes a pair. A gated entrance usually wants three, spaced to leave a clear gap at either side. It is the same post every time — only the number of them changes.

Posts are priced each, and the figure falls as you add them. Ring with the width of the opening and the surface it sits on, and you will have a delivered price for the whole entrance the same day.

THE CONTROL BOX

One box drives four posts.

The box is the weatherproof stainless unit that receives the signal from the handset and powers the posts. It is fixed near the entrance and wired to them.

It is £200 and bought separately. One of them runs up to four bollards on the same entrance, which is why a four-post forecourt does not cost four times a single drive.

Posts added later can run from the same box, as long as the total stays within four.

IN THE GROUND

Posts already fitted, on ordinary drives.

A single opening takes one post in the middle. A wider entrance takes a pair, set to leave room at both sides.
