Do you do…? Almost certainly, yes.
Years of wall and floor tiling, based in Sowerby Bridge. Below is every kind of job he takes on. Filter it, or type in the word you would actually use for it.
EVERYTHING HE TAKES ON
Ten kinds of job, in four groups.
Walls, floors, materials, and the extras he gets asked about most. One tiler, no subcontractors — the man who prices your job is the man who tiles it and the man who clears up afterwards.
10 OF 10 KINDS OF JOB SHOWN
WALLS
Specialist wall tiling
Full height, half height, or one wall of a room. Set out so the cuts land where nobody looks and the courses meet the door frame square.
The first row decides the rest, so it is the row that gets the time.
WALLS
Kitchen wall tiling
A splashback behind the hob, a run above the worktop, or the whole wall. Cut round sockets, switches and the extractor so the pattern still reads through.
Ceramic, porcelain, stone or mosaic — whichever you have picked.
FLOORS
Specialist floor tiling
Kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and utility rooms. The floor gets checked and made flat first, because a tiled floor only ever moves at the weakest point under it.
Most of that preparation is invisible once the floor is down, which is rather the point of it.
FLOORS
Underfloor heating under a tiled floor
Mat or pipework laid in, tested, and tiled over so it never has to be disturbed again. The warm floor becomes part of the tiling job rather than a separate trade turning up twice.
Worth deciding before the floor goes down rather than after.
MATERIALS
Ceramic
The everyday tile. Every colour there is, kind to cut, and what most kitchen and bathroom walls end up wearing. Because it is easy to cut, the setting out is where the care goes.
MATERIALS
Porcelain
Denser and harder wearing, which is why it goes on floors and in wet rooms. It also blunts blades and chips if it is rushed, and the surface beneath it has to be genuinely flat before anything is fixed.
MATERIALS
Natural stone
Marble, slate, limestone. No two pieces are the same, so it is laid out dry and sorted for shade before anything is fixed, then sealed once it is down. Thicknesses vary too, so the bed is worked to suit each piece.
MATERIALS
Mosaics
Borders, feature panels and shower recesses, with the sheets lined up so the joint between one and the next disappears. Edges are cut tile by tile, and every small square is on show at eye level.
EXTRAS
Bespoke tiling projects
One-off work that is not a standard room. An awkward shape, a pattern to hold across a wall, several colours to balance against each other.
Ring with a photograph and he will tell you whether it is doable.
EXTRAS
Domestic renovation & home improvement
Tiling as one part of a bigger job on the house. Worked in around the other trades on site, and around the family still living in it.
Nothing in the list matches that.
Which does not mean he does not do it. Ring 07123 456789 and he will tell you straight whether it is his sort of job.
ONE MAN, FROM THE QUOTE TO THE BRUSH-UP
No office, no call centre, nobody subcontracted in.
Jonathan is a qualified tiler with years of experience, working on his own. He measures the room, and he is the one kneeling on the floor a fortnight later.
Competitive rates and meticulous attention to detail is how he puts it himself. Being the only man on the job is what makes the second half of that possible.
Sowerby Bridge, and out across the valley
The van is the workshop. There is nowhere to come and browse, so he comes to you instead, anywhere in Halifax and Calderdale.
What will it cost?
Priced per job rather than off a list. It comes down to the tile, the size of the room, and what is behind the tiles — a sound, flat wall costs less to tile than one needing made good first.
ASK ABOUT A JOB
Ring, and he will fix a time to come and see it.
He is on the tools most of the day. Leave a message if he does not pick up and he will ring you back to fix a time, or leave the details here instead.
