The cleaners on Skircoat Green Road

Family run for over twenty years, in the same shop in Halifax. We do the jobs a machine at home cannot manage, and the ones nobody at home wants to do.

A shop, not a service

There is no app to download and no account to open. You bring things in over the counter. We tell you what they need, what it will cost and when to come back for them.

If getting down to us is awkward, we will collect and bring it back instead. Ring the shop and say where you are.

Twenty years in one place means most of what comes over the counter is familiar. The rest is interesting. Wedding dresses the week before and the week after. Whole bags of football kit on a Sunday night.

Not sure we take it? We almost certainly do. Ring and describe it rather than assuming — that is what the phone is for.

Dry cleaning

Dry cleaning is not a wash. The garment is cleaned in solvent instead of water, so wool, silk and tailoring hold their shape rather than shrinking or losing their press.

Bring anything the care label says to keep out of a machine. Mention a mark at the counter, because what caused it decides how it comes out.

Suits and jacketsCleaned as a set, so the pieces stay the same shade.
CoatsWool, wax and lined. In before the season, ideally.
Dresses and evening wearBeaded and sequinned pieces handled by hand.
Silks and delicatesBlouses, linings and scarves that a machine would ruin.
SuedeA specialist clean, not a wash. Ask about the piece first.
Stain removalTell us what it is and how long it has been there.

Ironing and service washes

Ironing goes by the basket. Bring the lot and collect it pressed. Shirts come back with the collars and cuffs done properly, bedding pressed flat.

It is priced on what is in the basket, so it gets weighed up in front of you. Nothing is booked in before you know the figure.

A service wash is the same idea, one step earlier. Drop the bag off and collect it washed, dried and folded.

Curtains, duvets and the big things

Household items are where a domestic machine gives up. Duvets up to super king, feather and synthetic. Pillows cleaned and dried through, not merely freshened.

Curtains come in with their linings. The lining is the part most people forget, and the part that shows the difference.

Also table linen, cushion covers, throws, blankets, removable upholstery covers and sleeping bags. And horse rugs, which surprises people until they think where else you would take one.

Repairs and alterations

A good garment is usually worth mending. Hems and turn-ups, zips replaced, suits and dresses taken in or let out, buttons, patching.

It is often the difference between a coat going in the bin and getting another five winters out of it.
